There are 2,773 residential aged care homes on the current national service list. Around 77% carry a published Star Rating; the rest are typically newer services, Multi-Purpose Services or regional programs.

What is a good Star Rating for an aged care home?

Most homes sit on 4, so 4 is common rather than exceptional and only about 6% reach 5. More useful than the headline number is the split beneath it: compliance is near universal, while staffing and quality measures are consistently the weakest across the country. A home that scores well on those is genuinely doing better than its peers.

Do I have to choose a home in my own suburb?

No. You can enter any home in Australia that has a place available and accepts your assessment. Many families widen the search by a few suburbs to find the right fit, which is why every one of our suburb pages also shows what is within 20 km.

How do I get into an aged care home?

You need an aged care assessment through My Aged Care (myagedcare.gov.au or 1800 200 422). Nothing is government funded until that assessment is complete, and the queue moves slowly, so applying early matters. You can shortlist homes while you wait.
