Understanding home care in Australia

How many home care providers are there in Australia?

There are 2,502 home care services on the current national service list. Home Care Packages transitioned to the Support at Home program on 1 November 2025.

Are home care providers given Star Ratings?

No. The government publishes Star Ratings for residential aged care homes only. No quality score exists for any home care provider, so compare them on what they will commit to in writing: hourly rates, care management fees, who actually delivers the care, and how they cover staff absences.

Can I change home care providers?

Yes, at any time. Under Support at Home your budget follows you rather than the provider, and exit fees are banned. If a provider is not delivering, switching is your strongest lever and most families have many alternatives servicing their area.

Does my provider have to be in my suburb?

No. Providers set their own service areas and many cover a wide region, so a provider based several suburbs away may well service your address. Always confirm coverage directly before signing anything.
