The waitlist, and how to use the wait
Figures as reported mid-2026; the queue moves as the government releases places. The uncomfortable truth of Australian aged care in 2026: approval is not access. Around 235,000 older Australians are waiting either to be assessed or for approved funding to actually start, and the median wait from approval to services beginning blew out to roughly eight months in the last financial year. The families who come through this best are the ones who use the wait, not just endure it.
The three stages of the queue
- Waiting for assessment. More than 120,000 people at last count. You cannot receive funded services yet. Priority: complete the My Aged Care application properly, and be honest about worst days rather than best days in the assessment; understating needs is the most common and costly mistake.
- Approved, waiting for funding. Around 88,000 people. You know your classification but money has not started. Priority: choose your provider NOW. When funding lands, families with a provider already chosen start care within days; families starting research from scratch lose more months.
- Funded, choosing or changing providers. Your budget is live. Priority: make sure it is buying actual care hours, not padding. With price caps deferred, provider prices vary enormously.
While you wait: what actually helps
- Shortlist providers before funding starts. It costs nothing and converts the dead waiting time into a head start. Request a free shortlist and we will keep it current as the queue moves.
- Ask about entry-level help. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme still provides basic services (cleaning, meals, transport) with shorter waits while you queue for a bigger budget.
- If things deteriorate, tell My Aged Care. Priority can be reassessed when circumstances change, particularly after a hospital stay or a carer breakdown.
- If residential care is becoming likely, start touring early. Homes with the best ratings near you are exactly the ones with the least availability. See homes and ratings near you.
Why we built a service around the wait
Most services in this sector only want to talk to you at the moment money is ready to move. We think the eight months before that moment are when a family needs the most help, so our shortlist service starts wherever you are in the queue, free, and stays with you until care starts.
